In May 2004, Mercado Global’s co-founders, Ruth DeGolia and Benita Singh, were named among the “World’s Best Emerging Social Entrepreneurs” by Echoing Green and received a $90,000 grant to launch Mercado Global.
The Gordon Grand Fellowship identifies leaders whose motivation to bridge the for-profit and non-profit sectors will advance the world of business and public affairs. Both Benita Singh and Ruth DeGolia were named Gordon Grand Fellows and received a $35,000 grant to support their work of launching Mercado Global.

Hands On Tzedakah works to combat hunger, poverty, homelessness and illness and supports projects that provide health and mental wellness support to the economically disadvantaged, disabled, abused, elderly and victims of terror. “HOT” also teaches people new skills so they can ultimately help themselves. Hands On Tzedakah provided floor looms for weaving cooperatives, stoves for ceramics groups, stainless steel tools for jewelry making and training sessions for artisans in Guatemala and partnered with Mercado Global to fund Hurricane Stan relief efforts in Guatemala.
In April 2007, Mercado Global Co-founder and Executive Director Ruth DeGolia received the Do Something Organization’s BRICK Award for “young people who change the world.” The Do Something Organization inspires, supports and celebrates a generation of young people making a difference.

The Levi Strauss Foundation (LSF) seeks to help women and youth build, own and have access to financial and social assets, enabling them to exert control over their lives and participate in the economy and society in a meaningful way. The Levi Strauss Foundation provided a grant of $20,000 to Mercado Global in December 2005 to help strengthen the organization during its first year of operations and to support their work in Guatemala with indigenous cooperatives such as AFEDES, an existing grantee of the Levi Strauss Foundation.
